Message I am finally back on the road after the driveline rebuild. The rebuild was initiated because of excessive freeplay in the driveline, which could not be sourced to normal problem areas such as bushings. As it turned out, the slack was cumulative; generated by the transmission, rear differential, and drive axles. All were found to be contributing to the problem.

After spending a little more than $4,000, the car now drives like new! It is very tight and responsive. I already had front and rear Carbing bars, SZ subframe spacers, and ST anti sway bars. After dropping the subframe, all the suspension bolts were tightened and the rubber lubricated. The shock tubes [rubber sleeves] were replaced and a general cleanup done. I repainted most of the underside and added about thirty (30) pounds of heat and sound insulation. The additional weight was offset by replacing OEM precats and exhaust pipes, so I think the net gain on the install was zero. The car clearly is quieter, and sounds much more solid.

The addition of the split down pipes and midpipes is quite dramatic. With no cats, I can immediately feel the additional breathing; even at idle. The spool up is quicker, and power comes on more linear. W/O cats, exhaust noise could be a factor for some owners. I have Borlas with a resonator and it was OK. I would definitely get a resonated midpipe if I did not already have one in the system.

The most noticeable change is the transmission. How nice to have a new box to stir. Shifts are smooth, clean and positive; with just the right amount a gear noise to let you know the teeth are meshing just right. To those members who recommended getting a new trans instead of a rebuild: Thank You! Good-bye bad synchros.

Here’s the bill of goods:

Transmission – OEM 97+ $2000 - Coz
Clutch – RPS Sport Street $420 – Coz
New Clutch Release Bearing

Flywheel – resurfaced $40

Down Pipes – Specialty Z (Gregg Dupree) $450

What's the difference between Daytona and New York??
